A popular Melbourne bakehouse started by a teenager who began selling treats from his kitchen is opening its second store at the weekend.

Bistro Morgan will launch in Fitzroy at 11am on Saturday, with the first 300 people to come into the store offered one of the bakery’s signature doughnuts for free.

The new location will mirror the Bistro Morgan flagship in Windsor.

“The Fitzroy store is more than a location; it’s a sentiment. It‘s a fresh chapter in the Bistro Morgan journey, one where every corner, every product, and every interaction tells a story,” founder Morgan Hipworth said in a statement.

“We’re not just opening a store; we’re weaving a new tapestry in the heart of Fitzroy.”

The Bistro Morgan Fitzroy store will have space for about 15 customers and says it is aiming to be a “bustling hub”, reminiscent of European cafes.

A dream from the age of seven

Earlier, Hipworth said he was “driven and determined” from the age of seven and would recreate dishes from his favourite cooking shows that the contestants had failed.

“I used to set up our dining room at home as a restaurant. I’d print out menu cards and scorecards and call it Bistro Morgan,” Morgan told 7Life last year.

There began a journey that would lead Morgan to launch two businesses aged just 15 — all while studying at high school.

At 13, Morgan made some samples for the owners of a local cafe to try and they then employed him to start baking cakes and slices.

Not long after that, the popularity of Morgan’s Valentine’s Day doughnuts “blew up” and he went from supplying one Melbourne cafe to 25.

Soon, Morgan was making 800 doughnuts from home every weekend and couldn’t keep up with demand.

Bistro Morgan opened permanently in Melbourne as Morgan went into year 11 and as of Saturday, he will have two stores.
