A popular Victorian bakery has been crowned the winner of Australia’s best pie with an unconventional entry.

Country Cobb Bakery, run by migrant Cambodian brothers Chan and Ryan Khun, took out the top spot at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Best Pie and Pastie Competition in Sydney last week.

Over 300 other bakeries from across Australia put forward their best entries, however none could compete with the brothers’ Cambodian inspired fish amok pie.

The fish curry pie is cooked with fresh Australian barramundi and is a nod to one of Cambodia’s national dishes.

“Fish amok or Amok Trei (អាម៉ុកត្រី) is a Khmer steamed fish curry with a mousse-like consistency,” the bakery wrote on Facebook.

“The dish is usually served hot in either banana leaf or coconut shells eaten with steam rice.”

The pie also took out first place in the seafood pie category.

Chief judge Stewart Latter commended the award-winning pie on its pastry and “amazing” flavour.

For co-owner Chan Khun, crafting a delicious pie is all about making the customer happy.

“Our pies make people smile,” he said.

“That’s the main thing. Every pie we send out, the customer (says) ‘wow’, that’s the best pie (they’d) ever had.”

It’s the fourth year the bakery has been awarded Australia’s best pie.

For those keen on trying one of the bakery’s more traditional pies, it also won first place for its pepper beef pie and Black Forest mushroom pie.

If five wins weren’t enough, Country Cobb was also awarded first place for its meat and vegetable pasty in the Traditional Pasty category.

Country Cobb has stores in Kyneton, Boronia and Springvale.
