Doritos’ major announcement sparks outrage: ‘Is this a joke?’

Read Time:3 Minute, 1 Second

Doritos has sparked a furious debate on social media after surprising fans with a new coriander-flavoured chip.

The herb is one of most controversial and divisive ingredients of all time – with as many as one in five people saying they can taste soap due to a super-sensitivity to chemicals called aldehydes.

The snack brand has bravely gone ahead to combine its corn chips with one of the country’s most hated flavours.

Fans of the chips are divided over the new flavour, with one saying: “Coriander is a waste of time to add to any recipe. HOWEVER, could Doritos change my mind?”

Another said: “Is this a joke? This is not April Fool’s?”

One added: “Honestly I loathe coriander. When I taste it in a dish after asking for none, it ruins my meal. So why on earth would I want my Doritos ruined as well?”

While one revealed: “Ah coriander how I loathe thee, the only other thing that makes me itch more is soap.”

However, many were excited to give the polarising flavour a go.

“I don’t really mind coriander, tastes alright in the right food so I’d be happy to give them a try,” one said.

Another shared: “Coriander is the best, I put it in everything, and as much as possible. And the smell, omg I inhale it so hard when chopping.”

One revealed: “Coriander is my drug! Tacos, nachos, salads, pastas, wraps, curries, pizza, toasties, burgers, sprinkled on top of baked potatoes, garlic bread – EVERYTHING! I buy two bunches every week in my grocery shop and it’s almost not enough. These chips will be epic!”

Another said: “I love coriander. This makes me so happy.”

The chips have launched in Australia, but shoppers keen to try the new creation will not find them in stores.

To get your hands on a free packet, Doritos is asking Aussies to put the new chip to the test and end the age-old debate once and for all – does coriander really taste like soap?

A limited number of packs will be exclusively available via a giveaway hosted on Doritos’ Instagram page.

“We’re excited to see the reaction of chip-lovers from across the country as they try our super-limited-edition Doritos Coriander,” said Vandita Pandey, chief marketing officer ANZ, PepsiCo.

“We know some fans are going to love it, but we also know some will hate it – our legendry triangular corn chip is ready to put tastebuds to the test.

“With the taste of coriander being one of Australia’s most divisive flavours we want to boldly launch the flavour in chip form and see if coriander really does taste like soap.

“Will it be a sensational hit or a soapy miss?”

For a chance to win a pack, head over to @doritos_aus and comment why you love or hate coriander.
