They’re a gooey combo of pastry and custard, but the beloved Aussie vanilla slice has always been tricky to cut – with the thick custard oozing out of the dessert when attacked with a knife.
Now, a bakery has sparked debate after sharing a “mind blowing” video showing the “correct” way to cut a vanilla slice.

Ferguson Plarre’s Bakehouse in Melbourne has shared now-viral footage demonstrating the best method to halve the treat – without the custard spilling out the sides.
Instead of cutting from the top pastry layer all the way through to the bottom, the baker turned the slice onto its side, so the custard was at the top.
She then ran the knife smoothly through the vanilla slice – with all the layers still intact.

“When you realise you’ve been cutting a vanilla slice wrong your whole life,” the bakery said.
The video has been viewed more than 2.1 million times – with many stunned over the “genius” technique.
“Why has it taken me 34 years to realise this?” one said.
Another suggested: “You mean I can eat them in a way that won’t squish all the custard out!?”
One asked: “Why have I never thought of this?”
Another said: “Omg what a revelation, amazing. Thank you.”
One added: “I was today years old when I learned this.”

However, not everyone agreed with the cutting technique.
“Thank you but if I start cutting a vanilla slice I’ve given up on life, I ain’t sharing that,” one said.
Another revealed: “I just shove the whole thing in my mouth and hope for the best, to be fair.”
One joked: “I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve had to cut a vanilla slice… I’ll be arrested for manslaughter before I share a vanilla slice.”
Another suggested: “Why are you cutting a vanilla slice? They should be inhaled whole.”
Australia’s best vanilla slice
In August, a bakery in regional Victoria claimed the coveted title of Australia’s best vanilla slice.
North End Bakehouse in Shepparton won big at The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph in Merbein, near Mildura.
It was the second national vanilla slice title that baker Matt Aylett has earned this year, having taken out first place at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Victorian Baking Show in March.
Previously speaking about his vanilla slice win, Aylett told 7NEWS 17 years of practice had helped him hone his craft.
“We make sure the custard’s perfect, pastry’s crispy, icing’s shiny, everything,” he said.
