A popular Sydney bar known for its 1950s-inspired aesthetic has been named the best in the world, based on artificial intelligence-collected data from more than 2000 sources on the internet.
Maybe Sammy was ranked first in the Top 500 Bars list for 2023, followed by New York venue Double Chicken Please, then Paradiso in Barcelona.
Located in The Rocks in the heart of Sydney, Maybe Sammy has accumulated a number of big titles over the years, including being named in the World’s 50 Best Bars — compiled via votes from bartenders and consultants, drinks writers and cocktail specialists — since 2019.

It also was voted Best Bar in Time Out’s People Choice awards for 2021 and 2022.
The Top 500 Bars list said Maybe Sammy, co-owned by Vincenzo Lombardo and Stefano Catino, paid homage to an “era (when) fashion and fun prevailed”.
“Their signature drinks are named after some of (Lombardo and Catino’s) favourite haunts on the Vegas strip,” the website said.

Top 500 Bars AI-generated list analysed more than 2000 sources on the internet, including reviews from journalists and influencers, to create its ranking.
Maybe Sammy was the only Australian bar to make it to the top 50 but two other Australian bars were in the top 100.
Re-, a no-waste cocktail bar also in Sydney, was ranked 96. It was recognised for innovation, as its owner has collaborated with eight other venues to source ingredients that are re-purposed for the menu.
The variety of whisky at The Baxter Inn, also in Sydney, was highlighted as a drawcard for the venue, which was listed as 87th best in the world.
